Bergen, Norway

You might remember that I explicitly talked about always walking either uphill or downhill in Stockholm, and I never thought I would visit a more hilly city-- that is, until I visited Bergen. Bergen is an old city situated on a harbour and surrounded by beautiful fjords, seven mountains, and when we went, the sun set at 9 pm! That definitely didn't mean that it was warm, as evidenced by the snowfall we experienced.

We reached Bergen on Friday morning, rode the shuttle bus into the city, dropped our bags at our Airbnb, and head out to look for some food. Impatient and hungry, we grabbed lunch at Subway and walked to Mt. Fløyen. We considered using the funicular (Fløibanen) to go up the mountain, but decided against it and hiked up instead to see the spectacular views. We intended to hike the Vidden trail up to Mt. Ulriken and use the cable car to get to the city, but we got a little lost on the way and, realizing we had spent a total of about 4 or 5 hours hiking, decided to walk directly to the city from the trail.

Famished and extremely tired, we went to a Burmese/sushi place for dinner, and I think I had the best noodles of my life there! We head back to our Airbnb after that and watched Without a Paddle before falling asleep.

When I woke up early on Saturday, my legs refused to acknowledge the fact that they had to (painlessly) transport me from one place to another. At least our day today would mostly be sitting on trains, a bus, and a ferry as we witnessed the beauty of the fjords and surrounding areas on the Norway In A Nutshell tour.

Who should we run into on the tour but our friend Kelvin and his friends?! After the tour, we had dinner together at Pingvinen, walked around Bryggen and Bergen city centre, and ended the day at our Airbnb watching Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

Sunday was our rest day; we woke up late, lazed around our Airbnb for a while before we had to hand over the key, and then head out to Bryggen, walked into all the souvenir shops we could see, walked along the Fortress, and were debating whether or not we wanted to walk out to the water when we ran into Kelvin + friends. They were headed to Bar Barista, the most hipster bar/cafe I've ever been to, so we abandoned our search for the water and followed them. I had some hot chocolate there and by the time we finished our drinks, it was time to catch the shuttle to the airport and end our trip.
