It's been about a month and a half since I got back from Sweden-- I've moved to Charlotte, NC for the summer, started my internship, earned some money, and moved photos from my phone and deleted some apps for the purpose of increased memory to store my memes.
General
CityMaps2Go
CityMaps2Go is an app that allows users to download maps for offline use. You can download maps of cities and then pin places of interest like restaurants, buildings, and streets, and then view them later when you don't have internet. You can also use it for offline navigation if your location services are switched on.
Mint
Living abroad for a semester can quickly get expensive, especially when you add travelling to the mix. Mint is a budgeting app that will help make sure you're using your (possibly) limited funds wisely. There are beautiful graphs and pie charts that make budgeting a little less stressful.
Your friends and family aren going to want to keep in touch with you, and roaming or calling international numbers can get expensive. WhatsApp is perfect for the occasional check-in when you have Wi-Fi, and you can even call other users through WhatsApp when texting doesn't cut it.
Living
Hostel World is one of the best websites and apps I've used to check hostel prices and book rooms. A word of advice-- book hostels as soon as you know you're travelling somewhere. The longer you wait, the fewer options you have and the more expensive it gets.
AirBnB
AirBnB is another option when you feel like you want your own space, and can sometimes turn out to be cheaper than hostels (in Bergen, for example).
Transportation
Sky Scanner
I used to browse through Sky Scanner every chance I got, looking for the cheapest flights. The best part of this website is that you can search for flights from your home to "anywhere" for a specific time frame and the website will return the cheapest places to fly to during that time period. It makes planning weekend trips a cake walk!
FlixBus
Flix Bus is a bus service like Greyhound or Megabus that takes you from one city to another or one country to another. I used it while travelling from Belgium to Amsterdam, and Zurich to Milan. I added it to this list because I chanced upon it during my travel searches and wish I'd used it more often as a convenient and cheap transportation option.
Rome2Rio
Rome2Rio is an app and website that shows you the different ways you can get from one place to another, often citing the cheapest options first. It's a good tool to use when you want a cheaper travel option than flying, and is abundantly useful in the trip planning stage.
